Foley fun

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Did a foley session tonight for The Night Life. I had a mocha before hand so I was all phlemy and made awesome growly gurgly noises. It was sort of hilarious. Also the pig intestines looked totally great. I was a little skeptical since I saw them up close, but man it was awesome. We really look like we are tearing that guy up.
So that was fun. And I made it out in time to get to my workshop. Yay!

Dance lessons 8.5 &9

Argentinian time!
Did a group lesson on Tango Tuesday with Mick that I met through Nicole. Nicole couldn’t make it though. We learned fun gancho and boleo moves and switched back and forth leading and following. It was super fun.

Then at lesson 9 I reviewed and practiced the Argentinian stuff I did from Monday and we added it to the end of the American routine we’ve been doing. It actually worked pretty well. Argentinian is much harder but fancier. I’m glad we are going into it because I suspect Melanie and Erika will throw some fancy stuff in there for the movie.

One thing I am also learning is that I wish my legs were longer. But oh well, what can you do? We’re trying to work out steps so that I can hit them on time but also give room for a goncho. Both instructors are tall dudes, so it might not be so awkward when I am dancing with Nicole or Lacey.

Black Dawn: Catalyst Teaser up!

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Hey, the miniserial/short film I did for the Black Dawn series has a teaser up on the site. There is also a date it goes up- May 5th. Yay!

Dance Lesson 8

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I got a free lesson from Jacob today since I helped out with the dance demo this morning. We decided to give Argentinian a shot. But not just little simple Argentinian, but like fancy kicky stuff. Certainly didn’t master it, but I started to understand it at the end. Then we reviewed all the stuff I’ve done in American Tango so far. I’ve realized that any given dancer does certain moves their own way. Jacob says that’s pretty common so just do what you are most comfortable with. I figure that’s fine with me. I’d rather learn different ways of doing a move so that if Melanie or Erika asks me to do it a new way I won’t be so stuck in one way. Adaptability! Woo!

Anya came by midway through to practice with a fellow. Maybe practicing for a competition? It looked more fancy than just a lesson.

Dancing is so awesome.

Early mornin' dance demo

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I got up at 3:15 this morning and got out to the studio by 4am. No one was there. I waited for a bit. at one point a car slowly made an illegal u-turn and drove by me slow, then went to park behind where I was (which is no parking for street cleaning that early). I kind of wonder if they were seeing if I was a Prostitute. Sorry to disappoint, sir. They left, but i was a bit creeped out. I decided there must have been a change of schedule and went back to my car. Someone pulls up next to me and gets out of his car and get’s out a gym bag. I ask him if he’s going to the studio and he was! I wasn’t misinformed or crazy! We go back and then there is a car in the back with another pair of folks waiting. Ok, I was just too early. In the end I could have shown up at 5 and had plenty of extra time. Oh well, it’s pretty standard in La to ask people to come way eraly since most people tend to be late. It’s a fact.

Anyway, KTLA showed up and we did various little lessons and practice dancing for the background while they did some quick live segments over the course of a few hours. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but Jacob and Willem are crazy good dancers. Probably why they are world champions. It was fun to get to see them dance together.

I started crashing near the end so I went home afterward and slept for another hour before going to work. I got a free lesson out of it, not to mention I learned a bit of salsa, rumba and got some swing practice. They taped one segment to show later tonight on the 9 pm show.

Dance Lesson 7

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Worked with Willem today. I got through all our moves twice around, which is good. They weren’t all perfect, but they feel more and more natural each time. And I got the pivots pretty well, which are my favorites so far. I also learned a new sort of transition promenade change or something move. It’s useful when you are maneuvering around other people on the dance floor. I also met Melanie’s dance partner Tony. He passed through the studio and I was introduced.

Oh- small world moment: The other day Willem met Nicole’s friend Mick that we went dancing with last week. Kind of random! We will probably all get together again this Tuesday for tango at Balliamos. They do group lessons and tango party every Tuesday. So fun! It’s Argentinian as well, so I’ll got more practice with those moves.

Now you can see CHEERBLEEDERS in 3D!

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

No that’s a lie. But you can see it with a wonderful campy intro by the vampiric host of Creature Features New Blood – Count Gore De Vol! It’s only up for 2 weeks, so check it out while you can. Or if you know me, remind me to show it to you sometime. It’s delightful.

There But Not There Screening

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

You ever been to a student film screening? Well, usually the quality varies widely from film to film. Tonight I attended an exception. I honestly had never even heard of Chapman U. before last year when I did a short and then did a thesis. They got a good film program there. We saw 5 films and they were all really well done. Kudos!

There But Not There (formerly called Price of Progress) came out wonderful. It’s a beautiful film noir about a black man who is forced to have a lobotomy after getting in a fight defending his white girlfriend (me). I’ll get a copy sometime in the next few weeks and update my reel. Yay!

The Witch is going to Rome

The Witch of Portobello was accepted into the Rome Film Festival. I don’t have details on it nor can I find anything online. I just got a text about it. But hey, that’s pretty cool!
