Helping out

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

This evening I helped out some friends who needed a reader for an audition.  It was from a show I’d seen them perform, so I was familiar with it.  I got to channel the actress impersonating a musician.  It was pretty fun.

I like to do that sort of thing every so often to remind myself that no matter how good you are, you might not get a role.  They didn’t bring in a ton of dudes, but each one was unique and good.  They were all referred by trusted people, so it was more like a call back in terms of quality.

But even being good didn’t guarantee that they were right for the role.  And it’s a bummer, but that’s how it is.  I think there was one guy who we all really loved, but wasn’t really right for the character.  Thems the brakes.

So I just have to tell myself that when I don’t get something:  I might be good, but I might not be that character for them.

And you say to yourself, “Well, how did I get here?”

Last week, after planning another trip out of town, I got another ‘first’ TV audition. Luckily my trip was to San Diego ComicCon and I could leave whenever.

So I finally got my first real TV audition, and get this – it was for a series regular on a network show!  What!?  How did I get that?  Usually you’re not even called in for those until you have a bunch of guest star roles, and those you don’t get until you’ve done a bunch of co-stars.  But hey, I ain’t complainin’.  I’m also realistic in my expectations.

Really my intentions were to have the office like me, so even if they don’t see me as the regular cast member, maybe they will bring me in and book me on the small stuff as the series gets going.  I felt good and confident.  I performed as I saw the character.  I left happy with my work.  That’s all you can do.  It was a pre-read with the Casting Director, so it wasn’t taped or anything.  He picks the ones he likes and they go on to audition for the producers and stuff.  I didn’t hear back today, and although I have no idea how long they are doing the pre-reads,  I’m going to enjoy his little ego boost of getting in the room and then let it go.

I usually don’t blog about auditions.  I usually let auditions go once I leave the room, but this one is a little more exciting, so I figured I’d blog it.  It’s a new milestone for me.

Qualia demo posted!

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

A while back I was in this project for Lead Balloon so they could demo a new camera rig designed by Social Animal. It allows you to watch a video in 360°. It’s what they used in that Devo video that was going around a little while ago where you could look around inside the video and click on things.

So, I’ve been waiting to get to see it finished and try it out.  Here it is!  You’ll have to watch it a lot to solve the mystery.  Hint- The people talking aren’t necessarily clues.  You kind of have to pick someone and follow them around to see where they were when Rico gets shot.

It’s pretty awesome.  There were actually 2 other camera positions but this demo is just with one of them.

Paypal no longer spec.

That Paypal spec ad I was in recently was bought by Paypal folks, so I’m guessing it will get used online? Not sure, but congrats to the director and those involved!

Still Beating – a.k.a. Dr. Bonesaw 1.5

Monday, July 18th, 2011

My buddy at Lead Balloon decided to use the footage from the Dr. Bonesaw promo and write a short film around it. So he had a writer friend write up a script and gathered a small crew. The other actor and I got there early to run lines and block stuff out while they set up. I think I was there about 8am since I live nearby.

They girlied up my friend’s bedroom and we started up there. He gave me a scar with this clear liquid stuff. It was kind of like nail polish in the way it tightens up the skin. After a while it peels at the edges and you have to reapply it. Well, it’s just as fun to peel off as dried Elmer’s glue (you know what I’m talking about!) so I just peeled it off when it needed changing instead of getting alcohol or whatever. But then the shoot ended up being until 2am, so it was peeled off a lot and the skin got a bit raw. By the end of the day it stung like hell when we put it on. Today it’s sort of like a long, thin, patchy sunburn. We joked that if they ever do a Bonesaw feature I’ll be in serious danger. The last mark they left was visible for a few months. Though, that’s more just that i am really pale and marks sticks around for a long time. He felt bad, but I totally ruined the end of his knife and jabbed a ton of holes in the kitchen counter tiles (for a scene, not just lunacy), so I call it even.

So like I said, we wrapped at 2am. It was kind of hard to keep my energy up since waking up even slightly earlier than normal puts me a little off all day. Even if I go to bed early my body just doesn’t like to get up early. There was a little section where they shot the other actor in the living room alone, and I tried to take a quick nap, but it didn’t work. When I was up again, I had some Coke (the soda not the narcotic) and it woke me up enough to power through the rest of the shots, which was the makeout scene, so it kind of required me to be more awake. Then I was still wired when I got home so I didn’t get to sleep until maybe 3am.

Even though we went pretty over in time, I think it’s going to be pretty rad. Might be the longest shoot day I’ve had, not counting those 24 hour film contests we used to do. But the nice thing is that I’m totally done with it! I might have some ADR (not nice to scream at 1am), but the only other scene doesn’t involve me. So I’m glad we finished, even though I am super tired today.

That time I was a wizard person.

Here is Chapter 4 from the Battle of Hogwarts. I think I did ok accent-wise. Not as good as other actors, but well enough I think. Something for me to keep working on. I went for a lower class sounding Brit. which isn’t the same as most of the other folks, but I am so very fond of pronouncing ‘th’ as ‘f’.

Battle of Hogwarts, comin’ atcha!

The fan film I was in has been released in increments and has some really positive reviews! I think I’m in tomorrow’s chapter so I’ll post that when it’s up.
